When BMW returned to touring car racing in 1973 with the E9 3.0 CSL the car known as “Batmobile” was also run by privateer teams. Among them was Burkhard Bovensiepen’s Alpina squad. Initially white, the car was given its legendary livery when a well-known herbal liqueur brand came on as a sponsor. Niki Lauda, Hans-Peter Joisten and Brian Muir enjoyed amazing success in the striking orange car, which was also raced by the likes of Derek Bell, James Hunt, Harald Ertl, Toine Hezemans and Jacky Ickx.
